Former New York Central Railroad bay window caboose at Phillipsburg New Jersey in 1973. From the internet.

I spotted this photograph at My links page Fallen Flags.Org located to the right of Your computer screen.

When railroads or other large corporations merge, sometimes it really takes a long time before anything gets repainted in to the new company colors and markings.

The Penn Central railroad was created from the 1968 merger of the New York Central, and the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1969, the New York, New Haven & Hartford also became part of the Penn Central Railroad.

Although this caboose is still rolling around in 1973 wearing the 1959 Jade green color scheme and cigar band style logo of the New York Central Railroad, it is actually now working as a Penn Central owned railroad caboose.

The Penn Central existed from 1968 until 1976.
