One of My personal all time favorite railroads I had come to know and love growing up on the near southwest side of Chicago Illinois during the 1960's and 70's era...was the former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad.

I have been a life long Santa Fe fan.

The standard plain looking boxcar red or oxide brown cupola caboose with simple A,T & S,F markings stenciled on the sides, were for many years the standard color scheme livery of Santa Fe cabooses. The steel cupola cabooses wore this very "Plain" color scheme from the 1940's until the mid 1960's.

I could remember the bright red Santa Fe cabooses with the large yellow circular Santa Fe emblem on the sides during the 1970's and 80's, but often I would wonder ..."When did this color scheme come in to being"?

This photo at My Link page Fallen Flags.Org to the right of Your computer screen just answered that same question for Me.

Several unrebuilt Santa Fe steel cupola cabooses are shown at Cleburne Texas in October of 1967. The cabooses to the right, are wearing the "New" color scheme. The lone example to the left, is wearing the plain A,T & S,F brown color scheme from earlier times. Some of these lasted in the plain color scheme in to the mid 1970's.

During the 1970's and 80's, the Santa Fe rebuilt their cabooses with a small side window, to detour rock throwers and vandals in urban areas.
