In loving memory of Elvira Scala. 1917 -2008. She brought a smile to Your face and a tasty hot meal on Your plate in Chicago's Archer Hts neighborhood

On Friday morning, March 29th 2008, Chicago's Archer Heights neighborhood lost a sweet little Italian lady, who could warm Your heart with a smile.

Elvira Scala owned and operated the little diner with the neon "EAT" sign on South Pulaski Road and west 49th Street.

I met Elvira Scala in 1978, while I was attending nearby Curie High School. I was tired of eating the same old food in the school cafeteria, and brown bagging My lunch wasn't much of a thrill either. One day I discovered her little homestyle diner down the street from school, sat down and enjoyed a delicious homestyle and very inexpensive meal, and soon became very good friends with her. I spent many a lunch time there watching the "The Price Is Right" TV Game Show with her, hosted by Bob Barker on CBS Channel 2 in Chicago.

Many of her local friends for some reason or another called her "Emilly",I guess that it was a nickname that had stuck.

She would operate her tasty homestyle diner during Breakfast and Lunch hours. A local bragged about favorite, was her homestyle Hash Brown potatos with onions cooked in them. Many times, I found Myself enjoying her Mosstocolli, or her homemade Italian macaroni and bean soup.

Elvira Scala was a very kind lady who radiated sunshine and lived life to the fullest everyday.
She had always treated Me like a Nephew or a Grandson, and always greeted local restaurant patrons with a kind word and a smile. She was an incredible little lady, and she will be missed.

Chicago's Archer Heights neighborhood won't be the same without her.
She is one of Chicago's many southside neighborhood legends.

Rest in peace Elvira, We all love You so much.

Thank You for all the happy memorys and home cooked meals.

Eddie K.
