One of the un sung hero day to day work horse locomotives found at work on many North American railroads during the steam era some 70 something years ago...was the often un noticed 6 wheel switcher types.
These basic but very practical locomotives, were the back bone of many railroads. They made up or broke down freight and passenger trains at busy terminals, Switched the yards, worked some of the switching locals, way freights and switched the locomotive shops.
Some were actually the main power utilized on small shortline or industrial railroads as well.
