The Belt Railway of Chicago 55th Street Junction near Chicago's Midway Airport. Chicago Illinois USA. August 2009.
I took this photo on a rainy summer evening in August of 2009. We are looking west at the crosstracks of the Belt Railway of Chicago 55th Street Junction. Here the Belt Railway of Chicago actually crosses itself with two different lines. To the right of the photo near the electrical metal utility shed, was were the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Stockyards branchline ran adjacent to the Belt Railway of Chiocago's east and west single track branchline. The IHB abandoned this branchline in December of 1988 and pulled up the rails the following year. 55th Street Junction is located just east of South Cicero Avenue, between West 55th Street and South Archer Avenue. A brick interklocking control tower stood at this junction until 1990.
