Eastbound CTA Skokie Swift train at East Prairie Road. Skokie Illinois USA. May 2009.
I took this photo after work one evening, in late May of 2009. Seen here speeding eastbound, is a Chicago Transit Authority "Skokie Swift" aka "Yellow Line" rapid transit train enroute to the Howard Street terminal in nearby north suburban Evanston Illinois. From the lines opening in 1964 utilizing a salvaged 5 mile segment of the abandoned Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee interurban railroad's Skokie Valley Mainline, to September of 2004...This line had overhead catenary wire between East Prairie Road and Dempster Street in Skokie. In 2004, the entire line was converted to 100% 3rd rail operation. Notice the roofwalks on top of the rapid transit cars from when the line used to have an overhead wire segmant and pantograph operation prior to 2004.
