Early CSX Transportation Company train with former Seaboard System locomotives. Hayford Junction. Chicago Illinois. July 1989.

One location in particular that I spent a lot of time train spotting at during the 1980's, was the busy Hayford Junction located at West 75th Street and South Central Park Avenue in Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood.

I took this photo on a hot summer afternoon in July of 1989. The railroad known today as CSX Transportation Company, was formed during the mid 1980's via the merger of several southern and eastern region North American fallen flag railroads. One of the shortest lived corporate named railroads acquired to create CSX Transportation Company, was the Seaboard System Railroad.

Seen here is an early post 1986 CSX Transportation Company train passing through the crosstracks at Hayford Junction, enroute to the Belt Railway of Chicago, Clearing Yard. The locomotives are still in Seaboard System colors and markings.
