A "New" digital electronic bell on Belt Railway of Chicago EMD roadswitcher # 583. Chicago Illinois USA. Saturday, October 15th, 2011., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
For many years dating back to the steam era, stationary non swinging locomotive bells...featured an electric solonoid mechanism with an adjustable timer and air operated clapper.
Todays latest inovation, is "Digital Technology", and it has now spread to the railroad industry.
Seen here is the latest digital locomotive bell design, with no moving parts. These bells are quiet functional and audible, but have a tendency to sound rather flat or "Tinny".
