A popular and well used early steam locomotive design used by the Southern Pacific Railroad, was the M 4 class 2-6-0 Mogul type steam locomotives.
Although long since replaced on mainline freight and passenger trains by larger and heavier steam locomotives and later diesels, these trusty and versatile engines had served the Southern Pacific all the way to the very end of steam operations.
This locomotive was photographed by C.W (Bill) Jernstrom at the Fresno California yard on July 9th, 1956.
