Grand Trunk Western locomotives idling at the former Elsdon Yard site. Chicago Illinois USA. December 1983., a photo by Eddie from Chicago on Flickr.
I took this photo way back in December of 1983.
The Grand Trunk Western Railroad had just recently closed their quaint steam era Elsdon Yard on West 51st Street, in October of 1983.
After Elsdon had closed, the railroad temporarilly used this little section of the former facility immediately adjacent to the north side of West 51st Street, just east of South Lawndale Avenue, as a locomotive and crew terminal until September of 1986.
Sometimes, one could find locomotives being fueled on site here, by tractor and trailer semi tanker trucks.
