Southbound Belt Railway of Chicago switching local at Hawthorne Junction. Chicago / Cicero Illinois. March 1987.

One of My personal favorites amongst the many photos I had taken during the 1980's, is definately this one taken at the Chicago city limits way back in March of 1987.

A southbound Belt Railway of Chicago switching local being pulled by an elderly 1950's era EMD first generation SW series yard switcher locomotive, is viewed crossing the Illinois Central Gulf crosstracks at a location now known as Hawthorne Junction at the border of west suburban Cicero Illinois.

Back then, the train traffic at the crosstracks was conreolled by an old brick interlocking tower on the southeast side of the crosstracks. I was told by a few railroad workers that day, that this tower was known as ICG / Belt Tower. This tower was actually called Belt Tower and was controlled by the Illinois Central Railroad.

The tower was closed in 1990, and soon after was demolished after a fire broke out.
