I found this photo at My Link page Fallen Flags.Org, located to the right of Your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org

Cupola cabooses were long obsolete on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, when this photo was taken in 1977. Tall freight car heights greatly restricted any visibility on behalf of the crew members, and the IHB already began welding steel plates over the cupola windows.

These 1920's era steel cabooses, still had a few good working years left on them, and were operated in to the early 1980's on IHB switching locals and some transfer trains.

One of these IHB cupola cabooses, is preserved on display in Commisioners Park in southwest suburban Bridgeview Illinois. It is repainted in a white, black and red color sceme, and is part of a Children's safety city exhibit.

I use to see these old IHB cupola cabooses in the New York Central style jade green colors almost daily, on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Stockyards branchline local on the southwest side of Chicago. I attended Curie High School from 1977 to 1981, and witnessed the IHB stockyards branch local passing behind My high school everyday.

The former IHB stockyards branchline, was abandoned in December of 1988, and parts of the IHB Stockyards branch right of way, were redeveloped in to todays CTA orange line rapid transit to Midway Airport in Chicago.

Thanks. Eddie K.

That caboose is ready for just about anything the urban environment can throw its way!
