I found this historic photo from pre Amtrak times while surfing the internet recently.

It is February of 1970, and the eastbound Western Pacific Railroad's own deluxe flagship streamliner passenger train known as The California Zephyr is viewed heading through Altamont Pass in northern California.

1970 was the year that this train was eventually discontinued prior to the begining of Amtrak the following year on May 1st, 1971.

The California Zephyr traveled between Chicago Illinois and Oakland California over three railroads from 1949 until 1970.

Amtrak revived the train name and some of the routing in recent years.
