Skipper's Drive In Restaurant. Wheeling Illinois USA. Early April 2010.
Prior to the mid 1970's, the greater Chicagoland area once had many roadside drive in restaurants from the 1950's and 60's Baby Boomer Era. Some actually were still featuring "Car Hop Service". This all eventually disappeared except for a small handful of drive in restaurants like Super Dog on Milwaukee Avenue, wich still features car hop service today, and The Frosted Mug Drive In located in south suburban Alsip Illinois wich closed in 2007.
Although many of these places closed as fast food mega giants like Burger King, Arby's, Taco Bell and Mc Donald's pretty much took over, a handful are still in business minus the car hop service of yesteryear.
I took this photo in early April of 2010, at Skipper's Drive In, located on Elmhust Road / Illinois U.S Route #83, just south of the intersection at Dundee Road / Illinois U.S Route # 68 in northwest suburban Wheeling Illinois.
The architectural styling and the former car hop service canopy, possibly give away the establishment's heritage as a former Dog N Suds drive in restaurant location.
While there is no car hop service here, this place specializes in Greek and American fast food favorites and has a small but cozy dining room as well with hanging plants.
Chicagoland's baby boomer heritage hasn't been lost to history just yet.
Thanks.
Eddie K.
