One old familiar railroad landmark just immediately outside of downtown Chicago Illinois, was the old Soo Line steam era elevated freight house along the west side of South Canal Street at the intersection of West Roosevelt Road.
Located just across Canal Street from the Burlington Northern / Metra commuter coach yard, I recall that this building during the early 1980's, also housed the office of Chicago's 20th Century Railroad Club.
The building was eventually demolished, and today, this is the site of a large outdoor retail strip mall with a Dominick's Finer Foods supermarket store.
