A former Norfolk & Western locomotive in the post 1971 color scheme. Chicago Illinois USA. January 1987.

A former Norfolk & Western locomotive in the post 1971 scheme. Chicago Illinois. January 1987.

After an all morning lake effect snow fell on Chicago one day in January of 1987, I packed up My camera gear and headed out to Hayford Junction for an afternoon of trains in the snow pictures.

Seen here is an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train departing from the Belt Raiilway of Chicago Clearing Yard. The rear locomotive is a former pre 1982 Norfolk & Western Railroad locomotive. After the merger with the Wabash Railroad and the Nickle Plate Road in October of 1964, may Norfolk & Western locomotives were painted in a solid dark blue color scheme with gold lettering. In 1971, the NW lettering on a black carbody became the standard until the 1982 merger with the Southern Railroad, that created todays Norfolk Southern Railroad.

It is January of 1987, and according to this....You could still find some NS locomotives rolling around yet in the 1971 NW scheme.

Great shot, Eddie. Thanks for the note about the paint scheme history, as well. I'm in the Southeast, so see a lot of Norfolk Southern.
