Westbound BNSF Railway empty unit coal train. Brookfield Illinois. July 2008.

There is nothing like spending some quality time railfanning with a camera in hand on a summer evening around sunset.

With the evening rush hour commuter train time slot just about over, the village of west suburban Brookfield Illinois begins to settle in for the night. However...that means more freight trains to photograph!

I took this photo at the Prairie Avenue railroad crossing around sunset, during a pleasant summer evening in July of 2008. A westbound empty BNSF Railway unit coal train is begining to gain speed as it heads in to the sunset. There will be a quiet period here after this, but that won't last for very long on this busy three track mainline. After approximately 20 minutes...the mainline will come alive again with several freight trains heading to and from Chicago at dusk.
